Jenny

Weill Cornell Medical College, Doctor of Medicine Candidate; Cornell University, 2013, Bachelor of Arts in Biology with Minor in Music; score of 2290/2400 on SAT I; National AP Scholar.

Jenny comes to us from a globetrotting international background. She was born in Beijing where she spent some of her elementary school years before moving to Toronto then Houston, Texas. She attended Bellaire High School, a prestigious magnet program in Houston, after which she moved to New York to attend Cornell University upstate in Ithaca.

At Cornell, Jenny led TA and tutor groups for the Evolutionary Biology courses for three years. This was when she discovered that she had a gift for teaching, conveying complicated material in a way that students can comprehend more easily while at the same time making them laugh. Jenny was also heavily involved in the Cornell music programs, and she was a member in the famed Cornell Chimes group, regularly playing the clock tower chime concerts for the campus. She also played the violin in the Cornell Symphony Orchestra.

After graduating from Cornell, Jenny’s love for the classroom led her to take a teaching position in a Boston high school, City on a Hill, for two years. During the first year, she led small group classes in English, Geometry, and Algebra. Then, she went on to teach Chemistry and Biology in the larger classroom sections during her second year. During her time as a classroom teacher, she learned the fine points of lesson planning, curriculum building, differentiated learning, and bespoke education plans for students.

Now, Jenny attends Weill Cornell Medical College and will be a medical doctor in the future, but the teaching bug has not let go of her yet. She continues to enjoy tutoring students in her spare time. An experienced instructor, Jenny uses her previous teaching experience in the college and high school classrooms to effectively tailor her approach to each student’s needs. Getting to know her students’ interests and learning styles is very important to her approach, as she believes that an individualized, personal approach is one of the most important aspects of engaging and motivating students. In the long term, she aims to build in her students the confidence and skills to achieve academic success independently in high school, college, and beyond. With her warm and empathic approach, Jenny’s students find that she makes difficult material feel more relatable and exciting.

In her spare time, Jenny enjoys playing the violin in quartets and orchestras, including the Music and Medicine Orchestra at Weill Cornell, training to be a yoga instructor, and traveling abroad. Currently, she is conducting a year of research at Weill Cornell in infectious diseases. Her passion for global health has led her to her current project studying better ways of diagnosing tuberculosis in resource-limited settings.
